OCR: Cold deserts are usually found further from the equator than hot deserts, but they may still become very warm in the height of summer. Another reason for the Great Basin's coldness is its elevation - many valley floors are 4000 feet or more above sea evel, and the mountain peaks may reach 12000 feet. Rainfall in the Great Basin averages between four and eleven inches each year - the Great Basin lies in the 'rain shadows' of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges
